Traveling from my home in the mountains of Park City, Utah, to lush Pa’ia, Maui beaches on a photography outing with Taryn Toomey was thrilling, but tacking on Sedona, Arizona, to our itinerary was over the top! We took our time, slowed down, and explored the power of nature. There was magic pairing naturally grand surroundings with Taryn’s grounded spirit.
Taryn is a teacher, an innovator, a shaman in some ways, and a guide who leads from a place of deep inner peace. Her essence is wild yet gritty and down to earth. She carries a brave force of energy, a natural rawness, and truth within every word.
The creation of The Class has been her life’s work and soul’s calling. She pairs music with fiery movement in a way as unique as she. Taryn built more than a business or a brand; she pioneered a lifestyle. She created new ways of moving through emotions and sensations to create a deep release. Ingenuity and creativity flow from her and touch each person who engages with her work.
During the Pandemic, she continued to teach us how to connect, move, and heal through her online classes. She’s on a mission to bring much-needed balance to our lives from the inside out. She is changing people by helping them de-stress, get grounded, and be in shape – making the world a better place.
Photographing her in two of the most spiritual places on earth inspired me deeply. Not only are Pa’ia and Sedona known for their natural healing vibes, but Taryn also has a unique way of inspiring and healing. I found myself in awe as we adventured through these two magical places. This was a beautiful change from my home in Park City, Utah. We were able to capture images showing the depth of creative expression within us both. It was a collaborative experience of making art.
During our time together, she was unapologetically herself. We wandered around, listening to music, and playing in the dirt, feeling the earth. It was fascinating photographing her connecting to nature and her inner child. Each element had meaning and depth, from the sand in her hair to the roots that go deep. We highlighted the wide variety of her soul. Many different parts all play together to form such a stunning human. I am happy that we were able to capture her essence in a fun and beautiful way.
In Arizona, we worked with a Harris Hawk from the International Raptor and Falconry Center. I knew the moment I met Taryn that I wanted to photograph her with a powerful iconic animal. Thus LeRoy a 7-year-old rescue and very experienced hunter. LeRoy joined in our creative process not as a prop but as a majestic bird who worked with us to marry the untamed to the calm and in control. We loved the energy LeRoy gave us as we found ourselves in awe of his grandeur. He made that part of the shoot surreal and I am forever grateful. The center is doing amazing things to help care for birds like LeRoy – you can donate to their work here.
The word “raptor” comes from the Latin word rapere, which means “to seize or take by force.” Raptors are impressive birds with curved talons and beaks for capturing and tearing flesh. Their visual acuity is 8x that of humans. They are amongst the most intelligent of their kind. Despite his intense look, he was calm in Taryn’s serene hands. Behind my camera, I had to wipe a tear away. It was an emotive moment witnessing their dreamlike connection.
Our wardrobe included pieces from La Ligne, Acacia, Stuart Weitzman, Free People, Hampui Hats, Caravana Land, and a few vintage treasures from Taryn’s closet. Taryn’s clothing choices showed her aesthetic beauty and her inner strength which made for a stunning contrast in our images.
